Digest for adsense-api@googlegroups.com - 4 Messages in 3 Topics

    hi,

am hosting a website programmed in PHP, and i want to log into my database
every successful displayed Ad unit in the page..
i want to store information such as visitor info, the visited address which
    displayed the Ad, etc..

*i want this to be done only ( if ) ad served correctly!*
is it possible for API to have a callback function on successful served
    ads?
i don't want to relay on server scripts only, since it will record every
page view regardless if ads served right or not!

some users might be browsing fast, or do not wait the page to be loaded
fully, some might be using ad blockers, and in these cases, i do not want
    to log it in database.

    any help appreciated!

    thanks

    "Sérgio Gomes" <sergiomdgomes@gmail.com> May 30 03:01AM -0700

    Hi there,

I'm afraid the API doesn't provide that sort of functionality; it only
allows you to retrieve your inventory (ad units, channels, etc.) and
    reporting data.

    Cheers,
    Sérgio

I was going to ask what is the best free alternative to Dreamweaver
but I did a search and someone asked a simulair question. Someone
mentioned Komondo edit. Komodo edit doesnt have a wysiwyg option like
Dreamweaver has. So I will ask what is the best free alternative to
Dreamweaver with a wysiwyg interface. I'd like to have both options.

    Laurel Hamrich <lmitro@cool-webdesign.com> May 30 07:42PM -0400

    Hi Rich,

Several of my clients use SeaMonkey browser to update their websites and
like it (took less time and training than Joomla). You basically navigate
to the page you want to edit and click Edit, and it opens up in an
easy-to-use editor. You can also edit and save new pages locally, then
upload later. The only issues we've run into so far have been for sites
hosted on BlueQuartz/BlueOnyx that have user subdirectories. The built-in
ftp doesn't understand how to get to the site root, so they have to use
FileZilla to upload their stuff. Also, sometimes related files like linked
PDF's don't upload automatically. If you're comfortable uploading with a
separate ftp program, SeaMonkey works very well. And they even have a
    version for Linux :)

    Good luck!
    Laurel :)

I agree. That is way too fanciful a font to be used in that way. If
you are trying to brand yourself, you must be unique, of course, but
not at the expense of legibility.

    > #2) Way too many English word misspells.
Yes, I agree. To the OP, contact me OFFLIST. I have a B.A. in English
and I can probably help with your grammar and spelling issues. And
    ... mo?da mo?e da mi pomogne nau?e srpski. :)

    > #3) Why wasn't I given the choice to go to the English site before the
    > Polish version loaded?
It depends on demographics (who will be looking at your site,
primarily), which language loads by default. @Doug, the language at
issue here is Serbian, not Polish, just FYI. If the OP is primarily
gearing his site toward a Serbian or Eastern European clientele, that
    language should load first.

    > #4) No padding around the textual content.
Agreed, needs to be more "air" there. I intensely dislike the cramped
and crowded effect of the current style.

    > #5) Way too many different styles of fonts used in the graphics. It looks
    > like a mish-mash of stuff that was collected and presented there, not a

To the OP: Study some great typography sites such as
http://www.ilovetypography.com ... to get an idea of what flies and
what doesn't. But the rule of thumb should be, if in doubt: Take it
    out! Less IS more.

Yes, you should use all lower case and no spaces if possible; rather
use hyphens or underscores if you MUST indicate some kind of space
    there.

Yep. Ditto me and separator bars back in the late 1990s! :D

    Hi Chris.

My site used to be in Joomla but I had issues with it and when I tried to
have it added to my ip provider they had no idea how to deal with it.

I did find the 1.0 and 1.5 clunky and it did not really give me the options
I wanted. It was limited in too many ways.

I am open to it though.

    George,

If your hosting provider is using PLESK to manage the server, there are
some serious issues with Joomla due to the fact that every time you upload
a component, plugin, or module to the site, PLESK will give APACHE
ownership of the files and you cannot edit them. The host can write a cron
job to run that changes the ownership back to you automatically, but that
solution is resource intensive if done often and inconvenient if not.

    Who is your host?

Never wrapped my head around Joomla! I stick with WordPress and CMS Made Simple. CMS-MS is flying under the radar for now and is not as prone to hack attacks as the popular WordPress is, and because of its easy backend, I put most of my small biz and NFPs on it. They love it. We are even now working on developing an ecommerce site with it.

I don't create any sites that aren't based on one CMS or another. Those are the two we focus on, but we have also built with TextPattern, ExpressionEngine and Get Simple CMS (that's one you might like; small footprint, flat file [doesn't use a database]; easy peasy to install and update).

    @Joni,

Wordpress has one thing good going for it. It is a corporation, therefore
they have tight regulations for inclusion in their plugin directory.

Joomla is a foundation. Things can get hard sometimes when extension
developers use sloppy code. Reviews are useless as shills commentspam the
directories (all directories everywhere). You have to find what works and
    fix what does not.

My main contract emails me about once a week with an "I hate Joomla " in
the subject.. It use to be almost everyday, so I guess either I or Joomla
is getting better. When I get a "Joomla sucks" email from him I reply with
" I agree, lets go with Drupal!" That quiets him down for awhile.

Honestly, I almost gave up on Joomla at version 1.5.22 but then 2.5 came
out and it renewed my faith.

    take 2.5 for a spin

Now, everytime I clicked the link to go to the old site, the new one
showed-up. Is the new site live? Oh, no, you must have bled one link over
    to another.

I'd say that "That is a fantastic improvement, though the old one wasn't so
bad, it certainly has been outdated with the new one."

    Cool. Good job.

    Doug,

I thought my review was tough! Living abroad has taught me quite a bit
about regional tastes. What we (Americans) like, other people find bland.
In some countries, they like bold contrasting colors and textures. I
believe it is due to a lack of choices in times of the past. Have a look at
    this old classic Wendy's commercial:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CaMUfxVJVQ for reference. What makes us
cringe, is entirely acceptable in some markets.

My wife and I are shocked and amazed what some people wear here in The
Philippines. Any given day of the week you can see a young lady wearing her
finest outfit which consists of something like a camouflage top with a
floral skirt, or maybe plaid and camo, plaid and floral, floral and stripe.
Sometimes even a combo of three items, one each of camo, flora, and stripe
or plaid. To top things off she might wear zebra-print high heels.
Creative wardrobing is so persistent here that degree programs for
professionals here have courses that detail how to match your clothes
    properly.

What makes some people cringe is very attractive to others. We dwell on
subtleties such as shades - We love to use Adobe Kuler (all designers
should!) and others think the more color the better. They are "Loud and
Proud" and it works for them in their market or niche. I have some sites I
have designed and built that are high contrast with black and bold colors.
They are built specifically for a target audience and reflect that.

I guess I am saying that your color commentary, while entirely technically
accurate from our viewpoint was pretty harsh. I realize the color scheme
makes your eyes (and mine) bleed but I didn't mention that because Ididn't
want him to feel like he was being bullied.

Ilija has emailed me on the side. I have decided to try to help him out if
I can. I am going to create an instance of his English version in
Bootstrap for him and post it. It will be a quick and dirty, but it should
help him out. He can download a zip and see the code..

Good day Chris, i visited www.bootswatch.com as you advised. got the
CSS files to download but there was no corresponding html to apply the
css to, or am i to build that from scratch myself?
It also introduced me to LESS style formatting as an alternative to
css, what's your stance on this?
The Kuler stuff was pretty cool but it offered me the themed colours
in an adobe file format i could not use, i was expecting it would
render the colour codes in plain text.
I really like your constructive criticism on this site and the
    solutions proffered.
    Thanks.

    Ernest,

I had a lot of time to reflect on our exchange we had that got so ugly.
What did I accomplish by attacking you? Nothing. You may have never came
back to this group and that would have been a shame. What can I accomplish
by instead actually offering constructive critiques and offering to help? A
Whole lot. A side benefit of teaching others is that oftentimes you learn
    in the process.

Most of us are freelancers here and are depending on the web for income. I
would say that none of us are in direct competition with each other. I have
a comfortable income. I am fortunate. I think I need to give back, and so
I have made a pledge to myself that I will help others along in their
    desire to learn.

I realize that the bootswatch site download is not actually a working copy.
I am going to email you a bootswatch / bootstrap zip for you to play with.
The template will be the orange and white design. You can download the
other bootswatch css files and replace the ones in the file I am sending
    you.

I am working on the bootstrap design of the i-design site right now and
will post it on my server and provide a link to the zip for others to
    download if they choose.

Some here wouldn't last five minutes on a Usenet group. :) Maybe that's why I don't take offense at what I see posted here. It's all pretty tame compared to alt.html.critique, or what that used to be "back in the day." :)

I still haven't been able to get the OP's site to come up so I assume he's working on some fixes.

When you come on a group, especially one that has a fair amount of professionals (i.e., those for whom web design and development is a living), you have to expect that you'll get some good advice. Which may or may not be candy-coated. And it may or may not be something that you particularly want to hear. But if it's constructive, even if it's terse or a bit "mean," it has value if you take that knowledge and apply it to your work. I'd rather have ONE person tell me my web site sucks and then proceed to tell me WHY and HOW I can fix it, than a thousand people saying, oh, yeah, it looks great, and leave it at that.

But that's just me. :) (And it's a huge reason you will have a hard time getting rid of me, try though you might!) :D

    Ilija and anyone else interested:

I thought it was going to be a relaxing week, but murphy decided
otherwise.. Anyhow, I got something up on my server that can give you a
    head start

    http://www.dgtebpo.com/iDesign/index.html

To see the responsiveness, re-size your browser.. Even the slideshow will
re-size for different devices. Observe how the columns on the home page
"stack" when you make the browser window smaller. Also observe how the menu
changes when you make the browser smaller. It turns from horizontal to a
button that leads to a drop-down menu

You can download the zip file at http://www.dgtebpo.com/iDesign/iDesign.zip

Here are a few more observations:

Your images for the slideshow were in differentextensions (jpg, jpeg, JPG)
and a naming convention was not used. I renamed them all using "camel
case" and the jpg extension. I also use camel Camel Case in naming pages.
It is just more organized. Once you start formatting everything you do
with a naming convention (It does not matter.. it can be hyphenated,
underscores, or Camel Case) on every poroject you create it just becomes
    natural.

Camel Case is where the first word is all lower case and all other words
begin with a CAP. for example: firstSecondThird.html

I am happy to answer questions if you have any.

    HI all.

In another vein here, I am looking for help on designing a couple of web
sites for my clientele. I would prefer someone in Los Angles/San Fernando
Valley area for ease of actually meeting and exchanging ideas but I am not
    married to it.

At least one site will be a commercial site and the others mostly
    informative community sites.

Please let me know if any of you are interested. You can contact me via
    email.

Please provide location and phone number.

    Thanks.

If you learn bootstrap, you will have a valuable tool in your toolbox. I am
not saying it is the only way to make sites, but it is my favorite flavor
this week. I still make my money on Joomla sites.

Study the code, get proficient at it, then find another tool to learn..
there are so many of them out there that all have their own advantages.

[Inside AdSense] New industry metrics to help publishers make the most from the web

Over 2 million AdSense publishers like you create the unique and diverse content that we all love - whether it's finding reviews for a new restaurant, or do-it-yourself furniture makeovers. Online advertising helps fuel this creativity, and we've been improving our products to help you make the most of every opportunity - from making it easier to earn revenue from the mobile web, or welcoming Indonesian publishers to the AdSense community.  One of the ways we can continue to support you is by giving access to new sources of industry knowledge to enable you to make the most from display advertising. With this is mind, today we're introducing a new report, "Display Business Trends: Publisher Edition".

What's inside for AdSense publishers? Well for starters, there are answers to questions like:
  • Which  ad sizes are rising in popularity? You control the ad experience on your site by choosing ad sizes that fit the design of your pages. But with such a flexible selection, which ad sizes should you pick? We found that 80% of all ads served tend to be the three best performing ad units for AdSense publishers: the medium rectangle, leaderboard, and skyscraper. We're also seeing fewer publishers use smaller ad units, like the 468x60 banner.
  • Is the mobile web really a big deal? We think so! We saw a 250% increase in mobile web impressions over the last three months of 2011. Growth in mobile usage has exploded, and there's never been a better time for your site to go mobile. Check out resources for publishers on our GoMo site and Mobile Mondays blogposts.
  • Which sites are showing strong impression growth? In 2011, we found that Shopping, Sports, and Auto & Vehicle sites were some of the fastest year-on-year growth verticals on the Ad Exchange and AdSense. We saw impressive figures across the board, with 15 out of 25 publisher verticals displaying double-digit growth.
  • Where in the world are you? All over, as it turns out. Of a possible estimated 245 different countries and territories, we saw publisher ad impressions from 235 of them. These included the island country of Palau - one of the world's newest sovereign states - and the middle-African nation of Equatorial Guinea, with astounding growth rates of 1106% and 4635% respectively. And while the United States still accounts for the highest percentage of impressions overall, we're seeing a significant representation from China and Japan, coming in at 11% and 6% respectively.

The Publisher Edition will be the first in a series of publications looking at aggregated global data from across Google's display advertising solutions, so stay tuned for more industry metrics to come. In the meantime, join the conversation and tell us what you think is behind these trends on our AdSense +Page.

Digest for adsense-api@googlegroups.com - 7 Messages in 3 Topics

Group: http://groups.google.com/group/adsense-api/topics

    "Raúl Mellado" <raulmellado@gmail.com> May 26 07:24AM -0700

    Hi all,

I am developing a WordPress plugin which polls the Adsense Management
API to get info about earnings; so far for development purposes I have used
most of the code from the google-api-php-client, but before releasing the
plugin I would like to get info about licensing issues (sorry if this is
not the best place to ask!).

I would like to have 2 flavours:

    1. Free plugin, uploaded to the WP Plugin repository
    2. Paid version, with premium functionality

My question is, how much of the Google examples code can I reuse for my
plugin (my main concern is the OAuth part, as the Adsense API part seems
not too hard for me to code my own version), in both versions (free/paid)?
WP Plugins (as I understand it) come under GPLv2, whereas Google samples
    are Apache 2.0 license.

Could you please show some light on this?

    Thanks a lot!

    Hi Raúl,

I'm afraid I really can't give you any advice on this, as it sounds like a
legal matter. I'll see if I can find someone at Google that can help you
with these issues, and get back in touch with you!

    Cheers,
    Sérgio

    Hi Raúl,

I'm afraid we really can't provide any legal advice on this matter; you
should probably seek your own legal counsel on these licensing issues if
you have any questions. Here is the FSF's page regarding the Apache License
v2, which may be a good start:

    Hi all,

I am querying the Adsense Management API for a report in earnings
similar to the one in the google-api-php-client example
    (metric: 'PAGE_VIEWS', 'AD_REQUESTS','CLICKS', 'AD_REQUESTS_CTR',
    'COST_PER_CLICK', 'EARNINGS',
    dimension: 'DATE')

, but adding a filter by a specific AD_UNIT_CODE. So, for those days in
which, I guess, Page Views and/or Ad Requests are 0, I am not getting the
row from the API for that specific day, thus leaving a gap in my report,
    like:

    2012-01-01 xxx
    2012-01-02 xxx
    2012-01-04 xxx

which seems to make the report a bit more confusing. Is this the
expected behaviour? If so, is there a way to get all the rows, even if they
show a 0 in all columns?

    Thanks for your help!

    "Sérgio Gomes" <sergiomdgomes@gmail.com> May 28 07:09AM -0700

    Hi Raúl,

This is indeed the expected behaviour; if there is no data for a given
date, no row will be shown for it. This applies to all dimensions, not just
dates and time periods, so for example if you choose PRODUCT_NAME as a
dimension, you won't get back any rows for AdSense products which aren't
    being used.

I'm afraid there's no way of changing this behaviour; you'll need to fill
in the gaps with zeroes yourself, which in your case should be a matter of
iterating through a calendar of your desired time range.

    Cheers,
    Sérgio

I have some AdSense Management API questions -

    1. As I understand, startIndex and maxResults support pagination for
    records within 5000
How do I paginate in case if records are more than 5000?

    2. I have noticed that the quota for this API is set to 1.0 request per
second per user. Which means that if 2 users make an api request within the
same second then this limit will kick in. I am trying to avoid this
    situation.
What defines a user? Is it the Client ID/Client Secret per project that we
    create?

    Thanks,

    "Sérgio Gomes" <sergio.gomes%google.com@gtempaccount.com> May 28 06:21AM -0700

    Hi Vaibhav,

    1. I'm afraid there is no way to paginate beyond 5000 rows. Pagination is
meant for very specific use-cases only, where the end devices are lacking
in bandwidth or capacity to retrieve the entire report in one go, and in
these cases there's usually no need to go beyond a few thousand records.

    2. A user is defined as an individual Google account (so in the case of the
AdSense Management API, an AdSense account). Do bear in mind that the limit
you're referring to is just the default, and it's actually configurable.
You can set it to a higher or lower value for your project by using the
"Set per-user limits" button in the Quotas section of your project in the APIs
    console <https://code.google.com/apis/console>.

If memory serves right, favicon was started by Microsoft, so if its not
coming then we must be doing something wrong.

By default, *favicon.ico *should reside in your webroot directory.

Suppose someone visits a page in your website like:
    *
    *
The browser will automatically send a GET request to
    *http://www.**yourwebsite.com/favicon.ico*
to get your icon file, which it may use.

So, if you put your icon file in the webroot, clear your browser cache (you
need to do this), then it should work.

Just as a note... to do this he has to use no rel link to any shortcut icon
in his code, or needs to use the code indicated:

    <link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://example.com/myicon.ico" />

    Thanks,

I viewed/inspected the file info on windows explorer and it was still a
.png, I don't know how but I changed it to Icon on one of my past attempts
at renaming the file. So I opened it up in paint and saved it as a gif and
now its an icon. You may have guessed I am no windows visual basic guru.
Also I had my code before the ifIE --end if subroutine code, I don't know
if that would affect the link or not. Still no joy, I am calling it a night

Something else to do when you are working on a web site and your changes don't seem to stick:

    At the command prompt (PC):
    ipconfig /flushdns

    In Terminal (Mac):
    dscacheutil -flushcache

    Hi,

A dislike giving reviews because I really do not enjoy upsetting people.
However, you asked for a review. I am not going to just critique your
site, I will try to offer some solutions as well

I took a look at your site and the first thing that came to mind is when
the site opens the user only sees a loading bar. For a lot of users, this
is a turn off and results in a back button being clicked. I realize it is
javascript, but I had to look at the source to find out. I thought it was
    FLASH at first.
Some web designers put the scripts at the bottom of the code right before
the </body> tag so that the main elements of the site load and the user
    does not "bounce".

The images in your shaker slideshow are pretty big (79k), maybe you can
optimize them or make them smaller so your page loads faster

The menu is nice, but maybe you could style the text a bit and make a
"Home" menu item so people can get back to your main page.

I had to browse the site in English. I noticed many misspellings of words.
I realize that being American we have a different style of English than
Europe, but some of the words misspelled are misspelled in either style.
Maybe you can find a native English speaker to translate your English
version so that your message is not lost in translation. It is important to
potential customers that you are able to deliver a site without spelling
    and grammatical errors.

I am going to point you towards bootstrap by twitter. Go to
www.bootswatch.com and check it out. You can build a nice responsive site
using bottstrap/bootswatch. The great thing about bootswatch is that it
uses bootstrap , which is a nice interface, and it has jQuery plugins out
of the box. It just works.Embrace HTML5 and CSS3. Embrace mobile because
your customers will want a mobile presence.

Here is a bootstrap site that I templated last week for a company in the US
http://m.clearpassage.com/index.html Open it up in your standard browser
width and then re-size your browser and watch what happens to the text and
images. Also watch the menu above as you do this. This site is their mobile
version, but it can be viewed on any device and look good. Thy are not
using any fancy plugins. It is simple, but effective.

    Good luck!

The best way I have found to handle images is to *not specify* an image
size in the code. The browser will figure it out. Then I add the following
    to the css file:

    img {
    max-width: 100%;
    height: auto;
    }

If I want to make a header 960 wide, it will automatically scale down as
    the device size changes.

I have some pretty standard web design errors that I think need to be
    addressed in Chrome on Windows...

#1) The logo... the I looks like a J because of the Blackletter style of
    script.
#2) Way too many English word misspells.
#3) Why wasn't I given the choice to go to the English site before the
    Polish version loaded?
#4) No padding around the textual content.
#5) Way too many different styles of fonts used in the graphics. It looks
like a mish-mash of stuff that was collected and presented there, not a
    themed design for a design/development company/freelancer.
#6) I have to point out this:
http://www.i-design.hostoi.com/Web%20design.php Such a URL is hard to
remember because it is a subdomain, it contains a capital letter on the Web
and I think a space (which is given in code), and then no capital on
design. This is being picky, but it ia also professionalism to clean this
stuff up unless you are using a system with really long URLS like Google or
Facebook and are so popular it doesn't matter.
#7) The use of transition effects in the presentation is kind of sickening.
Wait, I'm hungry. But it still isn't a pro move, you should stick to one
effect, or two, and use it/both. What you are doing is like everyone's
power point presentation. They have to use all the transitions no matter
what, to show how cool they are, but each is so different from another it
discombulates the style of the presentation. I made the same mistake when
I got a Video Toaster. Luckily, I took video production classes that
    straightened Me right out.

OK, that's a nice list of visuals to get you started. There are some good
points to the site, neat little tricks, but you have to look like you can
design, and it just doesn't look like that right now. Work on those and
    you will have a start.

I'll just have to take your word for it, Chris. I couldn't get the page to load at all (Firefox on Mac). You bring up some good points about responsive design. Any ideas, preferences for responsive image handling?

I am going to point you towards bootstrap by twitter. Go to www.bootswatch.com<http://www.bootswatch.com> and check it out. You can build a nice responsive site using bottstrap/bootswatch. The great thing about bootswatch is that it uses bootstrap , which is a nice interface, and it has jQuery plugins out of the box. It just works.Embrace HTML5 and CSS3. Embrace mobile because your customers will want a mobile presence.

Here is a bootstrap site that I templated last week for a company in the US http://m.clearpassage.com/index.html Open it up in your standard browser width and then re-size your browser and watch what happens to the text and images. Also watch the menu above as you do this. This site is their mobile version, but it can be viewed on any device and look good. Thy are not using any fancy plugins. It is simple, but effective.
