[WD&D] Digest for sitedesign@googlegroups.com - 2 Messages in 1 Topic

    Hi Stuart...

I just added the category Gothic along with some others. It's going to be
tough to update the ones that are currently in the system, though. I see
Gothic as Sans Serif and there is a Sans category. Roman would be serifs.
But I agree, people understand Gothic as a style better than Sans.

I might just wait to edit the current selection until I get a control panel
that allows this (as opposed to doing it in MySQL with phpMyAdmin). But at
least people will be able to select those categories should they need to,
    now.

I don't know about a Copper Plate category. That's it's own font. Maybe
an Engraver's category and CopperPlate can go in there with others?

OH, you are saying to add the Copper Plate font? Yup, will do. ;)

    For the categories, I added:

    Art Deco
    Black
    Block
    Corroded
    Cursive
    Dingbats: Cartoon
    Dingbats: Icon
    Dingbats: Logo
    Dingbats: Patterns
    Dingbats: UI
    Distressed
    Engraving
    Floral
    Gothic
    Impacted
    Incised
Patterned Font (Or should I change it to Textured Font?)
Regular (Or should I delete this and change "Normal" to "Regular", which is
    already used?)
    Shadow
    Stylized

The thing is, there were already plenty there and the block of 12,430 fonts
that came with the package were pretty well categorized. It will be a
future release before the software is updated to conveniently allow editing
    the existing font categories.

I'm not sure if I should add *Modern* and *Futuristic* or not?

    Always something.

I found out that some font artists require a link back from font archive
distribution sites and setup a page for that. I'm hoping they will add
that into the details for each artist in the next release.

And some artists require the font archive to be distributed intact, so I
have to disable some, as they want the so and so font distributed as
Regular, Bold, Italic & Bold Italic together. But the software only
previews one of the fonts in the archive. So bulk uploads have been
    requested, as well.

So I am lobbying for at least those updates and some others. For now I
have to disable some fonts that I would like to have online, but eventually
    I will.

    Hi Doug,
If you are looking are looking for 1 more search criteria for your list
just to be even, then maybe you should put a search for 'gothic' in. Which
is is a type of oldschool typeface for calligrapher's and also a style of
typeface, much seen in type sites from what I remember, and may just be the
same as searching for 'calligraphy', which itself is a broad subject. Maybe
design your own gothic typeface, and copperplate too, seeing as they are
probably public domain by now anyway. Unless you want to leave the odd
space for future additions of course.

They, that's pretty cool, Doug. You might want to either change the word
"Settings" to something that is more descriptive of it's function or
make it visible without clicking the word. For me it's just not obvious
    enough.

The idea is good. Sorry to be a critic, but I think there's a bug.

When I try to fetch some word with a lot of meanings, then it is
overlapping the footer links. This is because of the *height *style of
    the *result
div. *If you change it to *min-height* then its working perfectly. You
might want to look into it.

Also, it would be nice to have an image or something which shows that the
    data is being fetched.

One more thing. Is it necessary to have it lookup the dictionary after
every keypress? Like, if I am typing in a 45 letter word, then it makes 45
requests. For every request, my browser send 223 bytes. So, we are talking
about more than 9KB, just to get one word.

Maybe, you could check the field after a specified interval, check it
against the previous value and then send the request. That should bring
    down the number of requests.

Also, it would be nice, if you had an API to couple with this, which people
could access. That would lead to a better hit ratio for your system

One more thing. The input box has an *onKeyUp* event listener. What if I *PASTE
*a word into it? It won't work then...

I personally am not a super big fan of the design. However the functionality
is pretty cool. I like that you have the predictive intent in there and I
can see words/definitions as I type. I did find this problem occurring with
    larger definitions tho: http://screencast.com/t/fFbYr1O6cO

Looks like you need to have a push footer so that this doesn¹t happen.
Either that or clearfix would probably work too.

It functions beautifully. I am not too keen on the banner myself. The background graphic is great. I just don't care for the font effects. I dislike drop shadow (it seems so 90-ish), and the other effects on the light font color makes it difficult to read, IMHO.

I've been using this on footers with great success:

I want to expand this site later, make a more browse-able index of words and terminology, but that will take much more time. But if you have any ideas or suggestions what I can do with it, I would be more than willing to let you bend my ear.

Lovin' it... considering it takes more time than an average lifespan to
type the English dictionary. I will definitely use it for spell checking in
future. I think the word 'work' takes up the most space with 34 definitions
and I have to scroll down, which got me thinking maybe you may want to
paginate the results over multi pages.

    Peter Diamant <peterdatwork@gmail.com> May 08 06:46PM -0700

    Hi

I'm developing an application to create AdSense Reports
automatically. As we want to run this as a service, we do not want to
have a User manually logging in to Authenticate, so we need to run it
    using a "Service Account".

I have read on another post that Service Account Authentication isn't
yet available for the AdSense Management API. Can you confirm whether
or not this is correct? And if so, when will Service Accounts be
avaialble to use with the Adsense management API? We need to have our
service up and running within the month.

If Service Accounts can be used, can I use the latest Google APIs
Client Library for .NET to access the AdSense API with a Service
    Account?

    Thanks

    "Sérgio Gomes" <sergio.gomes@google.com> May 09 06:59AM -0700

    Hi Peter,

I'm afraid you can't use service accounts with the AdSense Management API,
since it accesses protected user data.

You'll need to use the standard web-based or installed OAuth 2.0 flows
instead, and run through the authorisation flow once. You can, however,
save your authentication data for subsequent runs, so that you only need to
    perform the authentication step once.

You can take a look at the AuthorizationManager class used by the .NET
samples to get an idea of how to persist your credential data between
    runs: http://code.google.com/p/google-api-dotnet-client/source/browse/SampleHelper/AuthorizationMgr.cs?repo=samples

    Hope this helps!

    Cheers,
    Sérgio

Thanks Sérgio. I will have a look, although I had already searched very
    extensively before posting on here.
I can't help thinking these guys must have "special" treatment from Google,
much like Dell do/did. They are suppliers of questionable-ish home/search
hijacking software aimed at kids. It's http://search.sweetim.com.
I am wondering if they are actually closely linked to, or part of
LabPixies, who were acquired by Google a year or two ago. That might
    explain the apparent special treatment.

Or, I could be totally wrong, and it's just not mentioned in the CSE API
    documentation.

    Thanks,
    Carl

Anyway, I'm surprised that the Adsense API doesn't cater for retrieval of
adverts for displaying on websites though.

Issue caused due to google~latest algorithm update. Use webmaster tools and
send re-consideration request to google. Tell what was happened to your
site. Don't mention keywords in public place.

    Mike <masalom001@gmail.com> May 08 10:32AM -0700

It depends on what you are trying to do.
Dynamic footer links will give a uniqueness to the page the footer
links are sitting (example:home page) on but will not help to pages
    you are pointing to.

I would add a static link on the footer or NAV to a page with all your
properties. I would add the dynamic footer to those property pages
    along with the static link.
Make sure you use good anchor keywords in the Property list page, also
include the static and dynamic footer links here.

You could divide properties into cities, then subcategories by size
and use other keywords here (words people/agents search for).

    Harsh <harsh2k218@gmail.com> May 08 10:39AM -0700

footer links are always helpful , but make sure it should not increase
    keyword density.

    danny <cabral.danny@gmail.com> May 08 01:55PM -0400

dynamic footer, ok... You would want a static footer

My keywords are dancing since 23 days , and now these are
at down positions , is it possible they came back , and what i should do
    during dancing

    Mike Salom <masalom001@gmail.com> May 08 12:09PM -0500

    Mahmood,

Not sure what you mean by "since23 days".
Google did have the Penguin change on April 24th. Which had more to do
with on page over optimization on a site.
You may have overly optimized or spammy content on your site? Avoid
miss-spellings of the keyword on the page (over-optimizing)

There is not much to do during this dancing as you call it. After a Google
update it takes a few days to a few weeks for things to normalize.
And since SEO has become more prominent over the past few years, everyone
else is trying to update their sites at the same time, so normalization may
    take a little longer.

    Hello,

    I have this website www[dot]e-minoxidil[dot]ro and www[dot]girl-
    fashion[dot]ro

I've noticed they disappeared from first 100+ results for some main
keywords. Was ranked #10 or lower for them .. that until I chose
someone that promised me some backlinks (I think blogs and some .edu
links in a *pyramid* structure or something). It seemed white hat to
    me.

But now, after like 2 months after that my sites dropped drastically.

How can I see what the problem is? How can I repair this mess?

    Thank you

    Harsh <harsh2k218@gmail.com> May 08 10:42AM -0700

contexual links from article, press release and blogposts will help
you to get your rankings back.

checkout bulk blog posting services at http://www.bulkblogpostingservices.info

    Daniel Perri <dpworkmail@gmail.com> May 08 10:42AM -0700

Check the links to your site and see what their page rank is. Then contact
those bad sites and ask them to remove the links. Any paid linking is a
horrific idea. You may have to repair it and ask for Google to reconsider
if it is the links causing issues.

Or get a new web site.

    "Frédéric Kpama" <kpamafrederic@gmail.com> Apr 29 07:45PM -0700

    Hi,

I'm currently developping my first website and I have a question about
redirection policy. The application is supposed to redirect the user
to the correct URL based on his/the browser preferred language. If the
user search for "http://site.com/foo", he's supposed to be redirected
    to "http://site.com/en-US/foo".

The problem is it's my first dealing with SEO and as I understand, if
I automatically redirect the request before knowing if it will be
served and not return an 404, if the request return a 404 after being
redirected a search engine can still index the page. Is it true?

    Thanks.

    danny <cabral.danny@gmail.com> May 08 01:14PM -0400

this type of redirection is not good, healthy for the site. I wouldnt
recomend ant type of redirection here, just install your site in / and on
home page have a link to that site you want, google will read your home
page, your HP is the power of your success /root

    Hi,

I have developed a Java program in Windows platform to retrieve google
adsense data. And now it can retrieve data.
Now I need to deploy this program to Unix Server and make it as daily batch
    which can be run automatically.
But I have faced two issue below:
    1. How can this java program run automatically?
When I run java program for each time, I have to *manually* click on
"Allow Access" button. I want to ingnore this step by some methods.

    2. Is it possible to run Java Program in Unix Server? Unix server do not
    have Browser.
When I run java program in Unix server, the program is pending on "*Please
Open the following URL in your browser*". I can't open URL in Unix server.

Please give some guideline on above two questions, any suggestion is
    appreciated. :-)

    Hi Brian,

It's probably simply the case that there aren't any earnings for those
products, for the period you're choosing. Since there is no data for them,
the products would not show up.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi,

I'd like to know if there is a way to get more than one metric from a
    single API call. I'd
like to get around 5-10 metrics in a single request itself so that I
    don't waste requests/bandwidth.
I tried the following url in the api playground

    https://www.googleapis.com/adsense/v1.1/reports?endDate=2012-05-07&startDate=2012-05-07&metric=PAGE_VIEWS,EARNINGS

    and got the following response

    HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request
    status: 400
    content-length: 419
    x-xss-protection: 1; mode=block
    x-content-type-options: nosniff
    x-google-cache-control: remote-fetch
    expires: Mon, 07 May 2012 07:52:12 GMT
    server: GSE
    via: HTTP/1.1 GWA
    cache-control: private, max-age=0
    date: Mon, 07 May 2012 07:52:12 GMT
    x-frame-options: SAMEORIGIN
    content-type: application/json; charset=UTF-8
    -content-encoding: gzip

    {
    "error": {
    "errors": [
    {
    "domain": "global",
    "reason": "invalidParameter",
"message": "Invalid value 'PAGE_VIEWS,EARNINGS'. Values must match
    the following regular expression: '[a-zA-Z_]+'",
    "locationType": "parameter",
    "location": "metric[0]"
    }
    ],

"message": "Invalid value 'PAGE_VIEWS,EARNINGS'. Values must match
    the following regular expression: '[a-zA-Z_]+'"

    }

If anyone knows of a solution, please do let me know.

    Thanks.

An item, "AdSense API Referral Bounty", shows up as a product in the
    performance reports of Google Adsense.

It reflects thousands of pageviews with zero earnings. What are these types
of adverts, where are they shown and why doesn't it perform as good as
    "AdSense for Content"?

    Thanks
    Pwn B

    Hi.
How can I obtain text adwords data (e.g. JSON) for custom presentation
    within my search engine?
I know of a site doing exactly that. (screenshot:
http://www.internetsomething.com/test.png ). Those adverts at the top are
AdWords. The data comes straight from the site though - it's not
client-side javascript as far as I can see.

We supply/install/maintain computers and networks here in England and we
set our Google-like home/search page as the out-of-box default for the
customer. We have previously used the Google-hosted Custom Search Engine,
but now are building our own, and using the Custom Search API to obtain
search data. We want to display adverts along with it, in a clean and
integrated fashion like Google do on their homepage, and like the example
site does in the screenshot. Of course the adverts need to tie in with what
the user searches for, because this is a search engine!

Can anybody please point me in the right direction?

    thanks,
    Carl
