    Hello guys,

I have a question for the designers and developers that are used to
cut a psd layout into html. I am trying to compare my performance
(the first time I do it, until now I got the html from the designer
and I developed the wordpress/joomla/business catalyst website) to a
    seasoned web designer.

How long (how many hours) does it usually take you from the moment you
open the psd file to the moment you finish the html&css file. Assume
there is no javascript inside and it's a fairly simple website (about
14 layout divs in total, about 1/3 have image backgrounds and the rest
simple color). I am interested in a real time, not what is quoted to
    the clients.

    Thank you!
    Maria

That makes me question why the sites aren't using PNG over GIF. Any image
experts out there explain that one?

a gif image can have a transpartent background and a jpg cannot. The
reason (I believe) that pngs are not used more is because IE6 did not
diplay png files with transparency correctly unless you installed the
"ping fix" script. Even though IE6 for the most part has gone the way
of the buffalo, old habits are hard to break.

    "mrrichardson85@gmail.com" <mrrichardson85@gmail.com> Sep 26 08:23AM -0700 ^

One big reason a lot of websites don't use .png images is because they
are typically larger file sizes when being saved, and ie6 had problems
with them. I prefer using .png images over .gif images when I am using
an image with a transparency, but it all depends on what you are going
to be using the images for.

One other problem with .gif images is that when you use an image with
a gradient (or gradients) it takes a little more work to get the
gradients to look right rather than with a .png file it just works off
    the bat.

From what I have seen, most designers will use a .jpg file if the
image has no transparency and is not a huge image. If an image has a
simple transparency then they will use a .gif file and if it is a
complex image that needs transparency and has a lot of gradients then
most people will use a .png file. I actually usually just use either
a .jpg image or a .png image, I don' really find that much of a
benefit in using a .gif over .png.

    Hope this helps!

    Matt
