I have read that search engines value text content early in the page as
opposed to further down. Taking this as true, then do the engines apply
this rule based on how the source is written or how the page appears?

In other words would a single line at the top that called up a large
graphic have adverse effect on web crawler treatment of the following
text on the web page, as compared to one with no graphic at the top?

    > Why we should use only one H1 tag?
H1 tags just provide the size of the affected text. AFAIK there is no
SEO rule against using more than one. It sounds like a rule for
    aesthetic purposes only.

Where did you come across such a rule?
