Google has a new search algorithm, the system it uses to sort through all
the information it has when you search and come back with answers. It's
called "Hummingbird" and below, what we know about it so far.

    *What's a "search algorithm?"*

That's a technical term for what you can think of as a recipe that Google
uses to sort through the billions of web pages and other information it
has, in order to return what it believes are the best answers.

    *What's "Hummingbird?"*

It's the name of the new search algorithm that Google is using, one that
Google says should return better results.

*So that "PageRank" algorithm is dead?*

    No. PageRank<http://searchengineland.com/what-is-google-pagerank-a-guide-for-searchers-webmasters-11068>is
one of over 200 major "ingredients" that go into the Hummingbird
    recipe.
Hummingbird looks at PageRank — how important links to a page are deemed to
be — along with other factors like whether Google believes a page is of
good quality, the words used on it and many other things (see our Periodic
Table Of SEO Success Factors <http://searchengineland.com/seotable> for a
better sense of some of these).

    *Why is it called Hummingbird?*

Google told us the name come from being "precise and fast."

    *When did Hummingbird start? Today?*

Google started using Hummingbird about a month ago, it said. Google only
    announced the change today.

*What does it mean that Hummingbird is now being used?*

Think of a car built in the 1950s. It might have a great engine, but it
might also be an engine that lacks things like fuel injection or be unable
to use unleaded fuel. When Google switched to Hummingbird, it's as if it
dropped the old engine out of a car and put in a new one. It also did this
so quickly that no one really noticed the switch.

*When's the last time Google replaced its algorithm this way?*

Google struggled to recall when any type of major change like this last
    happened. In 2010, the "Caffeine
    Update<http://searchengineland.com/googles-new-indexing-infrastructure-caffeine-now-live-43891>"
was a huge change. But that was also a change mostly meant to help Google
better gather information (indexing) rather than sorting through the
information. Google search chief Amit Singhal told me that perhaps 2001,
when he first joined the company, was the last time the algorithm was so
    dramatically rewritten.

*What about all these Penguin, Panda and other "updates" — haven't those
    been changes to the algorithm?*

    Panda <http://searchengineland.com/library/google/google-panda-update>,
    Penguin <http://searchengineland.com/library/google/google-penguin-update> and
other updates were changes to parts of the old algorithm, but not an entire
replacement of the whole. Think of it again like an engine. Those things
were as if the engine received a new oil filter or had an improved pump put
in. Hummingbird is a brand new engine, though it continues to use some of
the same parts of the old, like Penguin and Panda

*The new engine is using old parts?*

Yes. And no. Some of the parts are perfectly good, so there was no reason
to toss them out. Other parts are constantly being replaced. In general,
Hummingbird — Google says — is a new engine built on both existing and new
parts, organized in a way to especially serve the search demands of today,
rather than one created for the needs of ten years ago, with the
    technologies back then.

*What type of "new" search activity does Hummingbird help?*

    "Conversational
    search<http://searchengineland.com/googles-impressive-conversational-search-goes-live-on-chrome-160445>"
is one of the biggest examples Google gave. People, when speaking searches,
may find it more useful to have a conversation.

"What's the closest place to buy the iPhone 5s to my home?" A traditional
search engine might focus on finding matches for words — finding a page
that says "buy" and "iPhone 5s," for example.

Hummingbird should better focus on the meaning behind the words. It may
better understand the actual location of your home, if you've shared that
with Google. It might understand that "place" means you want a
brick-and-mortar store. It might get that "iPhone 5s" is a particular type
of electronic device carried by certain stores. Knowing all these meanings
may help Google go beyond just finding pages with matching words.

In particular, Google said that Hummingbird is paying more attention to
each word in a query, ensuring that the whole query — the whole sentence or
conversation or meaning — is taken into account, rather than particular
words. The goal is that pages matching the meaning do better, rather than
pages matching just a few words.

*I thought Google did this conversational search stuff already!*

It does (see Google's Impressive "Conversational Search" Goes Live On
    Chrome<http://searchengineland.com/googles-impressive-conversational-search-goes-live-on-chrome-160445>),
but it had only been doing it really within its Knowledge Graph answers.
Hummingbird is designed to apply the meaning technology to billions of
pages from across the web, in addition to Knowledge Graph facts, which may
    bring back better results.

*Does it really work? Any before-and-afters?*

We don't know. There's no way to do a "before-and-after" ourselves, now.
Pretty much, we only have Google's word that Hummingbird is improving
things. However, Google did offer some before-and-after examples of its
own, that it says shows Hummingbird improvements.

A search for "acid reflux prescription" used to list a lot of drugs (such
    as this<http://www.drugs.com/condition/gastroesophageal-reflux-disease.html>,
Google said), which might not be necessarily be the best way to treat the
disease. Now, Google says results have information about treatment in
general, including whether you even need drugs, such as
    this<http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/gerd/DS00967/DSECTION=treatments-and-drugs>
    as
    one of the listings.

A search for "pay your bills through citizens bank and trust bank" used to
bring up the home page <http://www.citizensbank.com> for Citizens Bank but
    now should return the specific
    page<http://www.citizensbank.com/online-banking/mobile-banking/default.aspx>
    about
    paying bills

A search for "pizza hut calories per slice" used to list an answer
    like this<http://www.fatsecret.com/calories-nutrition/pizza-hut>,
Google said, but not one from Pizza Hut. Now, it lists
    this<http://www.pizzahut.com/nutritionpizza.html>answer directly from
    Pizza Hut itself, Google says.

*Could it be making Google worse?*

Almost certainly not. While we can't say that Google's gotten better, we do
know that Hummingbird — if it has indeed been used for the past month —
hasn't sparked any wave of consumers complaining that Google's results
suddenly got bad. People complain when things get worse; they generally
    don't notice when things improve.

*Does this mean SEO is dead?*

No, SEO is not yet again
    dead<http://searchengineland.com/seo-is-here-to-stay-it-will-never-die-50192>.
In fact, Google's saying there's nothing new or different SEOs or
publishers need to worry about. Guidance remains the same, it says: have
original, high-quality content. Signals that have been important in the
past remain important; Hummingbird just allows Google to process them in
    new and hopefully better ways.

*Does this mean I'm going to lose traffic from Google?*

If you haven't in the past month, well, you came through Hummingbird
unscathed. After all, it went live about a month ago. If you were going to
have problems with it, you would have known by now.

By and large, there's been no major outcry among publishers that they've
lost rankings. This seems to support Google saying this is very much a
query-by-query effect, one that may improve particular searches —
particularly complex ones — rather than something that hits "head" terms
that can, in turn, cause major traffic shifts.

    *But I did lose traffic!*

Perhaps it was due to Hummingbird, but Google stressed that it could also
be due to some of the other parts of its algorithm, which are always being
changed, tweaked or improved. There's no way to know.

*How do you know all this stuff?*

Google shared some of it at its press event
    today<http://searchengineland.com/google-birthday-event-172791>,
and then I talked with two of Google's top search execs, Amit Singhal and
Ben Gomes, after the event for more details. I also hope to do a more
formal look at the changes from those conversations in the near future. But
for now, hopefully you've found this quick FAQ based on those conversations
    to be helpful. Danny Sullivan

[Inside AdSense] Introducing the Google AdSense Certified Partner Program

Since 2003, AdSense has helped publishers from around the world earn from their content and grow their businesses. Over time, we've also seen growth in the number of consultants and service providers who have built their own businesses around helping publishers succeed with AdSense. With this in mind, we've created the Google AdSense Certified Partner Program to work more closely with these service providers and recognize the expertise they've developed.

If you use AdWords or Analytics, you may be familiar with the similar Certified Partner programs we offer for those products -- qualified companies can become certified to help you manage your account, should you require additional support for your business. Just like in these other programs, AdSense Certified Partners are carefully vetted by Google, and meet rigorous qualification standards. AdSense Certified Partners can assist with dedicated services ranging from setting up AdSense ad code on your pages to running ongoing optimization tests for you.

For service providers interested in this new program, we've put together comprehensive training and testing resources that cover all aspects of AdSense. Once a company has passed our qualification exam and met additional criteria to become a Certified Partner, they'll be added to our official program website and receive a program logo for their own site. Certified Partners will also have access to marketing resources and tools to help them manage client accounts, and will join a group of accredited companies. We currently have 13 active Certified Partners, and will be adding more to the list throughout the year.

If you're a prospective Certified Partner or a publisher interested in the services offered by these Certified Partners, you can visit our program website or Help Center for more information. We look forward to working with this group of partners and continuing to expand the range of options available to publishers in the AdSense program.

Well, this problem is about your specific environment and it doesn't look
related with the API or the client library.

Have you installed the JSON PHP extension?

    Cheers,

    Fernando Basso <fernandobasso.br@gmail.com> Oct 22 06:20AM -0700

We had some websites that were on the first page of the results. After
reading and watching tons of official google videos and docs, we learned
that we were doing too much keyword stuffing in our titles. We then decided
to have more specific titles, no keyword stuffing, but just using one or
two keywords very specific for each page. A moth later those websites were
no longer on the first page. We lost 30% of page visits.

Also, we completely removed the meta keywords tags, but I don't believe
    that would make any difference.

I hope someone can give me any hints.
    Thanks in advance.

    Google Expert Michael Wilson <mikewilsonseo@gmail.com> Oct 23 04:43PM -0400

I can tell you that it's probably not related to the fixing titles. If you did the right thing then it's fixed. There are many other factors involved. Can we see the sites please and we may be able to help.

Did you created example.sqlite with lower SQLite version?

Would it be "safe" to rename that file and start auth again?

    $dbh = new PDO('sqlite:examples.sqlite');
    $dbh->setAttribute(PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE, PDO::ERRMODE_EXCEPTION);
    $stmt = $dbh->prepare('CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS auth ' .

    $stmt->execute();

Or to create it "auto-manually" :)

    <?php

@*Jose Alcérreca* I'm not frequent poster on this forum, but if you allow -
just one small suggestion / question :)

In Forum configuration, in "Information", on "Web view customization" page,
there should be "Source code highlighting" option - could it be enabled?

"*Code* highlighting" could perhaps be convenient option for AdSense API *
coders* - if that option exists on this forum, and if it is not disabled
because of some reason, of course. :)

Looks like it's a version mismatch problem. What versions of PHP and SQLite

[Inside AdSense] Get your multi device strategy off the ground

As tech-savvy consumers, we've all contributed to the growth in online traffic coming from mobile and tablet platforms, and as publishers you've likely heard the importance of adapting a multi-device approach to cater for this growing trend. But exactly how important is it? How do you develop a multi-device strategy? And how does all of this equate to increased revenues for you?

Over the coming weeks, we'll run a series of posts that aim to answer exactly that. We'll explore building mobile solution options to suit you, and also explain how you can use AdSense to monetize your mobile sites or AdMob.

Where are your users coming from?
We're living in a multi-screen world where users expect to have access to information, people, and computing power from any screen. Here are just a few findings from a recent survey*:
  • 81% of consumers use their smartphones while also watching TV
  • 66% use their smartphone at the same time as their laptop
  • 83% of mobile users said that they wouldn't leave home without their smartphone
  • 63% of users said that while they may not make their final purchase through a mobile, they would definitely use their phone to gather info and help them with their purchasing decision.
To see how these shifts in consumer behavior are relevant to your site, check the Platforms report in your AdSense account. It's a good idea to pull a comparison report and track the growth in your percentage of mobile and tablet users over the past quarter or year. Chances are, you're going to see a shift away from desktop with more of your online content being reached via tablet and mobile. Hi Jose

but refresh token last "only" 3600 sec...isn't it?
If Yes, how can I manage a "refresh" without human interaction?

    Thx

"Jose Alcérreca (AdSense API Team)" <adsenseapiadvisor+jose@google.com> Oct 22 09:33AM -0700

    Hi Matteo,

Don't worry, the client libraries handle that for you. They will use your
stored refresh token (that doesn't expire) to get a new access token (that
expires in less than an hour).

    Cheers,
    Jose

    Jose,

I'm still having problem with client library....
I though It could be possible managing in different way (example by storing
authorization code and performing request like DFP API does...)

    here response I get from index.php (/google-api-php-client/examples)

Runtime error: Could not json decode the token
    #0 /dati/google-api-php-client/src/Google_Client.php(172):

    #2 /dati/google-api-php-client/examples/adsense/index.php(52):
    AdSenseAuth->authenticate('sample_user')

Sqlite seems could create DB (I find a examples.sqlite file in the
    directory)

Is there a Deatailed guide on how to use/works example ?

    Matteo Giampaolo <mgiampaolo@gmail.com> Oct 22 10:33AM -0700

I've read several time the PHP instruction but there's no issue (only
    dowload files....)
I've also tried creating DB (examples.sqlite and table auth) but then I get
    different errors

Runtime error: SQLSTATE[HY000]: General error: 26 file is encrypted or is
    not a database
    #0 /dati/google-api-php-client/examples/adsense/AdSenseAuth.php(137):

    AdSenseAuth->getToken(Object(PDO))
    #2 /dati/google-api-php-client/examples/adsense/index.php(52):
    AdSenseAuth->authenticate('sample_user')

is there any other action I've to perform (other than download library and
    create sqlite DB)?

in the meanwhile I try to adrees adsense API with a "manually managed
    token"...

    thx

[Inside AdSense] Learn how to evaluate the user experience on your site

With only a few seconds to capture a user's attention, we all know it's important to have a great user experience on your site. One of our goals is to help you create a user experience that will keep users coming back to your site.

In the past, we shared our guiding principles for user experience and asked some of our most successful publishers to share their thoughts. However, many of you told us you'd like to see more examples of how to actually apply the principles to your site. We've heard your feedback and, on November 1st, we'll show you how in a Learn with Google Hangout on Air that takes you behind the scenes of a user experience consultation.

During the Hangout on Air, we'll evaluate a pre-selected AdSense publisher's website and teach you how to take a step back, apply a critical eye, and evaluate whether or not the user experience on your own site complements your site goals. We'll identify specific changes the publisher can make to improve the user experience, walk through our recommendations, and answer a few of your user experience questions, which you can submit when you RSVP to watch the live stream.

RSVP to let us know if you'll be watching the Hangout on Air and we'll see you on November 1st!

    Hello,
First I'd like to say that I'm no SEO expert and I have a little knowledge
    in anything regard it.

My website - http://www.metaclock.com was the 4th result for the search
term "online alarm clock" (in any country and language I checked - mostly
    english) and other keywords
but for a week now it's went directly to the second page!

I didn't touch the website for more than a year (I don't really need to
change it, as it's only give free service to people who enter)
In my Webmaster Tools it tells me that my website is having "Big traffic
change for top URL" , but no message or e-mail was given of any penalty
    what so ever.

Yes, I've heard that google changed something in their algorithm a week ago
but the current situation doesn't even make sense to me,
websites ranked way below me went to be first results while I got to the
second page, I was the 4th or 5th result for search term "online alarm
    clock" for years,
and now I got way below while one of the new top sites doesn't even have a
homepage (I got a 404 page) and another is a just a flash (.flv) file - as
I said, I'm really novice to SEO but this really doesn't make sense to me.

I'm really frustrated. I hope someone can help me.

    Thank you

    Kyle Postlewait <3149itt@gmail.com> Oct 16 11:01PM -0700

    Heyo,

I manhandle the website and SEO for a hotel in Japan which is way too
stuffy to let me get much of anything done.
In -general-, people/companies in Japan are way behind on their
understanding of the web/SEO/computers, and I'm kind of out in the country
    so it's even worse.

I get calls from "SEO" companies and web-site construction companies and
all sorts of sharks almost weekly, and I just wanted to finally ask the
question out loud and make it clear to myself.

    ------------
Making a program to auto-click links is both in violation of Google rules,
and really wouldn't do much anyway. Right?
    ------------

This company has been bugging me for a while to the point they're trying to
come next week and present their goods for me, so I told em to call back
tomorrow so I can research and then tell em off. The lady on the phone
after I badgered her for a while ended up telling me it's a CD that you put
in your computer that will automatically up page rank, and that a new CD
will come every two weeks. Auto-click spamming is all I can think of....
and I have no idea how they plan to hide behind an hour long presentation,
but I am not interested in listening to it XD

In truth I think they should all just be arrested, but maybe I'm just
bitter after dealing with manual actions and what not from other people
messing with stuff clearly labelled as bad practice. I supposed Yahoo cares
less about all of this, and Japan loves their Yahoo, but I love my Google
and I'm not interested in hurting my page rank in Google AND spending money
on it, just for some auto-clicks from the same IP. There's no way I'm
giving them money I just want the know-how to finally tell them why they
    need to stop calling me.

    Thanks for any input.

    Kyle

    Bruce Dishongh <brucedishongh@bwaretech.com> Oct 17 10:20AM -0700

I have a very new site, http://www.sportsfieldsusa.com, that Google began
indexing on or about 5-26-2013. Webmaster Tools now shows that Google has
indexed more than 4,600 pages out of more than 5,100 pages currently on the
site. So far so good, at least in my mind. However, 4 days ago, Search
Queries in Webmaster Tools fell from an average of 700-800 per day, with a
few peaks of more than 1,000 per day, to 10! Certainly this cannot be
good...and I assume that it has to be in response to something that I have
    done wrong recently.

Since I am actually developing the code for the site, I keep notes on what
I changed and when. I deploy code updates to the site almost daily, but
what I don't know is what day did I seemingly "offend" Google? Can I assume
that the day of the drop is the day that some change I made caused the
issue? Or is there likely a delay from Google that I have to account for?
Google is still indexing the site as Webmaster Tools continues to show
pages being added to the index. Until 4 days ago, the site was showing
gradual but steady progress, now my only traffic is from AdWords or
directs. Webmaster Tools currently shows 92 duplicate meta descriptions and
4 duplicate title tags. I resolved all of these yesterday morning. Were
    these the likely cause?

Any ideas on where I might start looking for issues would be appreciated.
Criticisms are certainly welcome, whatever it takes, I just want to get the
    site back on track.

    Regards,

    Bruce

In webmaster tools go to links to your site...

Go to each page that has a link to you. If you see a bunch of other differnt websites that are not alike in any way then you need to find the webmaster of the site. Email them ask them please remove the link ....
When you have done them all... Let Google know. GoogleBot Will find changes as well.

    Jevaughn Brown <tigarianinc@gmail.com> Oct 11 03:51AM -0700

I did a post on my blog that is relevant to people interested in this
    discussion. Here's a part of it…

Every year for at least 20 years now more money has been spent online in
every business category than the year before as people worldwide turn to
the Internet for their wants, needs and interests. Consider these
    eye-opening research facts:

61% of global Internet users research products online. (source:
Interconnected World: Shopping and Personal Finance, 2012)

44% of online shoppers begin by using a search engine. (Interconnected
World: Shopping and Personal Finance, 2012)

60% of all organic clicks go to the top three organic search results.
    (MarketingSherpa, February 2007)

75% of users never scroll past the first page of search results.
    (MarketShareHitsLink.com, October 2010)

However, all this also means there's a swamp of competition in almost every
niche or industry online. Worse, the SEO rules seem to change every month,
contradicting last month's best practices. These are the core reasons why
almost all online businesses seek effective search engine optimization for
their websites, yet struggle to achieve meaningful results.

If you learn how to achieve it, consistently high rankings for the right
keywords will steadily drive large numbers of interested visitors to your
website or those of your clients every month. And if you play it right, you
can also build a "herd", as The Millionaire Maker Dan Kennedy calls it, of
loyal repeat customers from this quality traffic.

An information overload of SEO tools and courses have come out lately, all
claiming to teach how to search engine optimize for 2013 effectively – or
even swearing to do it all for you work-free. How can we identify a
genuinely top quality SEO system out of the sea of posers before us? Read
the rest of this article to find out here: http://bit.ly/SEOsst1

these keywords ranked in 250 and 300 plus positions. Why this happened?
here is the URL of website "buysellteach (dot) com".

Google Penguin 2.1 was launched around this time. So there is every chance
your websites were hit by this update from Google.

    Hi All,

As per my experience, nothing beats the classical time-tested methods
    which are
    1. Good quality & unique text content.
    2. Age of the domain supported with back links.

The other factors come secondary and their importance increases or
decreases according to the decision of Google. I would say..nothing
beats the power of backlinks to imporve the position of a website in SERPs.

There are two very different ways I can help you make money right now.
One is through a business opportunity and the other from something
different thats going to require some explanation (but requires no effort
    at all).

    1. In a business I have, I am in position to make a huge bonus. In order
for me to earn that bonus, I need to sponsor a new person and help them
build their income up to a very good level. I am going to help someone do
that so if you need a new income, this is a guaranteed type of situation.
I know how to build business and I want to earn that bonus so it's going
    to happen for someone.

    2. The other I will explain if you are interested. It's not a business
opportunity. It's a very specific situation and requires no business
building. It's direct money from me and it can be done by anyone. It's
not an income like the first thing but it's very simple and fast.

Let me know if you are interested in making an income or some fast money
because both things are guaranteed and easy given the circumstances.

    Hey everyone!

I have a site that took a huge dive at the beginning of the year and its
been so hard to recover. Still have some rankings but its been a chore to
    keep them.

    any feedback would be great!

    http://www.buildingdreamsoc.com/

Keyword: orange county landscape design, orange county landscape

    thanks everyone

    Google Expert Michael Wilson <mikewilsonseo@gmail.com> Oct 11 08:10AM -0400

    Can I be honest?
The site reads for Googlebot or for visitors?

all i see is key word pages.....
i see this kinda thing all day long....

<title>Orange County Masonry | Orange County Stonework - Orange
    County Landscape Design</title><meta name='description'
    content='Millennium Construction a Professional Stonework &amp;
Masonry Specialist is a best leading company serving all of Orange
County. We support Newport Beach, San Clemente, Yorba Linda, Rancho
Santa Margarita, Laguna Niguel, Los Angeles, Irvine, Southern Califor'
    />

you dont need orange county 3 times in the title... see were im going?

local pages are very good but repeating the phrase over and over wont score y
    ou Google points.

    focus mor
e on pages for the visit
or. example michaelspearls.com is over 50 pages of content.. i
haven't even added photos and shopping yet

Im being gentle... my buddy GogleBot does not like it when it sees a
site focused on him. He likes it when the visitors needs addressed
    first.

    I hope that helps.

    Dear Friends,

my website is mlmage.com and it was getting Ist page position in google on
keyword "mlm software india" but one website mlmsoftwareindia.org has fully
    copied my content,design and images.

my website is getting position on Ist page on keyword "mlm software" .

Now google is showing that new website on Ist Page and my website is
removed totally from all 1000 results.

So I think it's an error in google search engine or something else...
question: if one website is same as previous and It can harm the Ist then
anybody can harm any website by coping it's competetors website.
    2. If someone has copied all website of mine then It should come under 1000
rank but it is fully removed from the search.

Please help me if someone have any idea about this
