[Inside AdSense] Social Fridays: Using Google+, Brazilian news portal Estadão merges news with discussion

Posted with delay-- originally released Friday, October 26, 2012

Every Friday, we're posting Google+ tips to help publishers make the most of all of the features and resources available. Be sure to check back each week for the latest in our educational Social Fridays series!

While the world of communications has changed quite a bit since the Brazilian newspaper O Estado de São Paulo was founded in 1875, sharing high-quality news, analysis and reporting has remained its constant goal. In order to provide information in real time, the influential paper launched the portal Estadao.com.br in March 2000. And with social media a growing priority, Estadão launched its +Estadão page on Google+ in the second half of 2011.

According to Digital Content Director Claudia Belfort, an early discovery was that Google+ offered a slightly different opportunity from other social media channels already in use by Estadão. "I realized that the comments on Google+ were more elaborate. Our followers are very interested in contributing to a discussion so we decided to invest more, always with this focus."
Over time, Estadão has built Google+ into its content strategy as a result of the platform's unique ability to stimulate conversation and discussion. Cláudia believes that Estadão's audience is interested in a network that's not just social, but also enables knowledge exchange. With this in mind, the team publishes content specifically relevant to Google+ followers, rather than replicating the same content across all of the social media outlets that Estadão uses. They've found that the network responds particularly well to serious themes, so posts cover topics like economics, politics and current affairs, often with an informal tone.

But it's not only the exchange of ideas through the written word that Google+ facilitates for the newspaper. Estadão takes advantage of the visual strengths of the platform by posting full images, captivating video content and stimulating face-to-face discussion through frequent Hangouts, the free, high-quality video chat feature unique to Google+. Plenty of creative channel-specific initiatives are underway: a daily video of economic analysis, a nightly podcast summarizing the main news of the day and a weekly trailer previewing new cinema releases.
Estadão uses Google Analytics to understand visitor behavior, and it's clear that Google+ is having a positive effect on traffic to the portal. Over a five-month period, Analytics showed that visitors to the Estadão site from the Google+ page increased 540%. At the same time, this traffic generated an uplift in page views per visit of 18%. Currently, the Estadão Google+ page has over 500,000 followers.

Want to replicate the brand's success? Read all about it in the full case study, and feel free to share your experiences with us on our AdSense +page.

    Hi Sergii,

In order to receive today's data you can use "today" keyword instead of a
    YYYY-MM-DD date.

Please bear in mind regarding this particular figure:
    - It's not exactly up to date. Consider an hour delay.
    - The system uses PDT (Los Angeles) time<https://www.google.com/search?q=time+in+Los+Angeles> so
"today" might not cover your 0:00-24:00.

Please let me know if that works for you.

    Cheers,
    Jose

If my current time zone isn't PDT (Los Angeles) time and i will use 'today'
    - is it ok, will be used server time 'today' or my today? Because there can
be situation when my date and PDT (Los Angeles) date is different dates)

And one more, how often does data in adsense update? every hour or in real
time or how? for example if i will update reports every 5 mins - will it
    have some effect?

    Thanks

"Jose Alcérreca (AdSense API Team)" <adsenseapiadvisor+jose@google.com> Oct 29 08:00AM -0700

It will use the server's "today" so you could be in a situation in which
    that means different dates, yes.

You can run a report every 5 minutes and each one will have new data. If
it's a small report you are probably fine in terms of quota, but make sure
you get just what you need.

    Cheers,

    Hi Sergii,

The AdSense API doesn't expose hourly reports, only daily.

The client ID can be obtained using the "list" method of the "Adclients"
    resource.

    https://developers.google.com/adsense/management/v1.2/reference/adclients/list

    So, for IOS it's GTLAdSenseAdClients.

Digest for adsense-api@googlegroups.com - 3 Messages in 2 Topics

Group: http://groups.google.com/group/adsense-api/topics

    Geek Life <geeklife.adm@gmail.com> Oct 26 07:02AM -0700

I created a site about technology, with news, articles, reviews and
information about movies, music and games. Planned investments to have
people interested and potential followers. With that created channels in
major social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube) etc.. At all
times respecting the rules of use of such networks. I have active campaigns
of ads on Facebook and Google, but in Google I've been facing some problems:

    Regarding Goggle:

1st. Signed up to the site domain in Google Analytics service and it is
working properly, logging all activities on the site.
2nd. I created and joined in Adwords campaigns with active ads at Youtube
    videos
3rd. With Adwords also have active campaigns on words and searches for the
    site.

    Thus,

    a. If I have correct Analytics statistics on my site, correctly record
activities on pages, clickthrough rates, access, etc..
    b. If I create ads for Youtube account, as to the Site, and both are being
    paid correctly to Google.
    c. If according to item b, have active accounts, correct and accepted the
services above, we can consider that my account / site records and are in
accordance with the rules of use of Google, the contents are readable and
compatible with their methods of use, because they are being billed and
    recorded correctly.

But it's not what happens when I try to register for Adsense, I can not
register and receive a status that my site has no content readable. I do
not have any more detail for this status and I believe is contradictory as
it is accepted in other services. With that, I can not finish the
registration and now my account on youtube received the status of
    Monetization blocked.

I would like to get a clearer status, why I did not manage to get my
account approved on Adsense/Monetization and properly configured in my
    youtube account.
As I am an active user, that is paying to Google for using its services,
would like to know why Im not able to use in other services.

So I ask the clarification why I did not have my account active on:
    Google Adsense
    Youtube monetization.

If there is anything I can do to be in accordance with the rules of
practical use, copyright or any other requirement, I am available.

    Thank you,

    Leonardo Pereira Martins

    Hi Leonardo,

I'm afraid this forum is only for discussion of the AdSense APIs, while it
sounds like your problem is with AdSense account activation. You'll
probably have better luck getting an answer at

    Hi Michael,

User authentication/authorization is also only required once. You should
give the generated URL to the users and let them grant the authorization.
This way you don't have to store passwords.

You can automate this with a set-up process in your page by redirecting
users to the URL or you can do it manually, if you don't plan to expand,
using a script to generate the URL and sending it to the users and waiting
    for them to authorize.

This process is only needed once per user, not per session. If you are the
only user I would go for the manual option.

    Cheers,
    Jose

    Hi Darian,

I'm afraid this is not available in v4.1 at the moment, as we're not aware
of any significant usage of this feature in v3. We may add it back in a

    Hi Friends,

Could some one of you kindly help me to understand the click rate for the
links that appear on a Search page. Say, percentage of clicks that goes to
the PPC ads that appear on the top of the page, percentage of ads to the
right hand side of the page & percentage of clicks to the organic listings.

I do understand that the click rate would vary from query to query & domain
to domain. For product searches, for brand & for the non brand search
phrases. However, if some can can help with the average click through rate
    also will be helpful.

    Thanks in Advance.

    Kunal.

Google Adwords rates is based on a bid system - the marketeers that pay the
biggest price will get the top of ads' spots.

    Hi Vic,

Thanks but I am not talking about the adwords rates here. I am questioning
about the click rates on a results page based on an entered search query.
To put it in simple words, let me give an example --

Say few set of users search for a query "home loan calculator". Basis this
search term, Google will come up with a result page comprising of Sponsored
& Organic links. My question over here is now based on the results that
appear is there any way to understand how many users click on the PPC ads &
how many on the organic listings? how many people click on the top ad v/s
the ads that appear on the right hand side? how many scroll till the bottom
of the page & click on the 7th or 8th listing? how many people leave the
search page with out clicking on any links? how many people simply check
the ads that appear above fold?

Any estimates with the percentage of clicks on the search result page?

    Kunal.

    Vic Dinovici <vdinovici@gmail.com> Oct 23 07:28AM -0400

based on the clicks heat maps it seems the hottest areas are top and left
of the page so probably there is a good number of users clicking on the
paid ads and the first results in organic. I'm pretty sure if you search in
google search for e.g "percent users click adwords", etc you will find the
    answers.

[Inside AdSense] Mobile revenue from AdSense enables Ultimoprezzo to invest in growth

Italian site Ultimoprezzo.com provides a unique service to online consumers. It supplies information on stores and their opening hours, as well as their best prices for smartphones, TVs, tablets, laptops and other consumer electronics products.

As a supplier of free services, Ultimoprezzo needs to be savvy about its strategy for generating revenue. AdSense provides a straightforward solution.

"The Google AdSense program is the ideal way for us to monetize our publishing efforts," explains founder and CEO Alberto Giacobone. He says Google AdSense not only provides Ultimoprezzo's users with relevant and interesting advertising information, but also provides its advertisers cost-effective ad placements since Ultimoprezzo doesn't need to maintain a sales network.

Globally, smartphone usage is on the rise. In Italy alone, 69% of smartphone owners never leave the house without carrying their device and 82% use their smartphone to perform research on a product or service. "Certainly, the numbers speak for themselves," Alberto affirms. "In Italy and abroad, we are increasingly in a 'post- PC' era where smartphones and tablets accompany us at all times and everywhere, often even while we are doing other things."

Very early on in Ultimoprezzo's development, Alberto's team perceived an opportunity in the mobile space. An internal team developed Ultimoprezzo's mobile-optimized website, while a special agency developed applications for iOS and Android.

So has the company seen an uplift in mobile traffic? "The trend is clear," says Alberto. "Mobile traffic is growing and is now already more than 15% of our total traffic. And this is not only down to the growing popularity of smartphones which cost less than $100; what we notice is that the users are getting better at exploiting the technological tool at their disposal more and more frequently." With Ultimoprezzo's non-mobile traffic volumes booming as well, by the end of 2012 Alberto estimates mobile will account for one-third of the company's total traffic.

AdSense provides a way for Ultimoprezzo to monetize its content across devices. As new digital platforms emerge, AdSense makes new revenue streams available. "The AdSense program has allowed us to invest in the growth – both in terms of quantity and quality – of the services to our visitors, so we can keep them free always. "

This information is current as of October 23rd, 2012.

    Jose,

    Thanks for your response

Regarding the first time to authenticate, the part where the user
    authenticates and authorizes with google...

In the examples, the flow is to redirect the user to google and have google
send the response to the callback url.

I only know how to implement with this flow requiring a web browser

However my code is on a server and the only user is myself,

    How should I authenticate?

Can I authenticate through command line?

I wish I could use the server application flow but it's not available for
    adsense.

    Hi there,

There can be many reasons for that; the simplest one being that there is no
data for the criteria you specified.

I would suggest you try running a report in the AdSense website<http://adsense.google.com>.
If that report works correctly and returns some data, then try running an
    identical report through the API.

    Hope this helps!

    Hello again,

The error you're getting seems to be a standard Google account login
security measure. If you fill that in once, it should clear.

As for getting the approval prompt, I'm assuming you can run your
application once, manually, before turning it into a cron job. If you do
that and complete the flow, you'll get an access token and a refresh token.
The former is used to make requests, but is short-lived, whereas the latter
allows you to generate new access tokens but does not expire (unless the
user explicitly revokes access to your application).

Once you have the refresh token, your application can generate new access
tokens as needed, automatically, without any user input, which should solve
your problem and keep it fully automated.

    Hope this helps!

    Cheers,
    Sérgio

    Hi Mike,

If you store the Refresh Token the first time you authenticate, you can use
it to generate new Access Tokens so manual intervention is only needed
    once.

If it's only a few accounts, you can carry out this process manually using
    the OAuth2 Playground:
    https://developers.google.com/oauthplayground/

    Hi!

The AdSense Management API doesn't currently support this kind of
granularity but you can use Analytics to obtain earnings data for each
page. However, this is not exposed by their API. Perhaps the Analytics API
team can help you out in the Analytics Forum.

    Cheers,
    Jose

Since we cannot use the service authentication flow for adsense, I have to
    use the web application flow.

However, I am requesting from a server to only a few personal accounts.

I do not want the be redirected to google to click "allow".

How can I bypass the "manual process" part of oauth 2 where you have to go
to google and get the refresh and access tokens.

Can I programmatically click the accept button or completely bypass this
    step?

    Mike

    Thanks Google team for response.

I have to access google adsense report via curl, so that each day my cron
will run and save the report for my reporting system. And as cron dont runs
on browser i need a way to do this without "having the approval_prompt" not
    even once.

for this i have one script that is working fine for my localhost but not on
    my live domain.

at live domain it gives error (screenshot attached).

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks ,
