I agree with Reg here. From my experience, keeping things organic produces the best results.

    Hello to all SEO specialists.
This is my 1st post here; please do not judge too hard...

    Description:
We are in the process of creating multi-domain site to present
localized content for www.shalomlife.com users in different countries.
    We have 3 locations:
    Canada: ca.shalomlife.com
    USA: us.shalomlife.com
    International: www.shalomlife.com

We use IP Geotargeting to redirect users to their location. After
users choose another location (click on the flag) we save it in their
browser cookie and use for all following requests.

We're just starting the US site and its content is very similar to the
content of Canadian site. In future there will be more local articles
created by the US writers and editors.

    Issues:
    1) Redirects.
Google scanners are located in the USA. The site automatically
redirects them to us.shalomlife.com and they have no access to content
located on ca.shalomlife.com. Currently we redirect all pages, but we
decided to do so only for the home page and will implement that
shortly. But the Home page would still have an issue… Should we
'trick' Google and do not redirect its scanners?

    2) Duplicate content
All international articles will be visible on both domains. Local
Canadian and Local US articles will be visible under "world" category
on other site. Will Google punish us for that? What is the solution?

    3) International domain
International users will arrive on www.shalomlife.com. This site will
be similar to us.shalomlife.com until we have more locations. That
means 2 completely identical sites… We could use www.shalomlife.com
for the USA users instead of us.shalomlife.com, but then switching
from Canada to USA doesn't make sense for the international users… Any
    suggestion here?

    Thanks,
    Eugene

Welcome Eugene to our thriving community!

    My answers are:

    1) I would not consider tricking Google with redirects, especially using
cloaking. Google has huge army of human reviewers you will be caught,
especially if you start getting traffic.
Use only 301 redirects and understand that Google will focus only the
destination domain, although it can take a couple of months to register all
    pages.

    2) Avoid duplicate content on your main websites at all costs. Period.
Rewrite the content if you wish to have multiple sites in the same language.

    3) You should use Google webmaster tools to indicate which domain you wish
to focus for each country. Otherwise, purchase the domain names like
www.shalomlife.ca No need to host it in the country of origin.

    Good luck,
    Gary

Google's algorithm is smart enough to figure it out. Recently I was trying to optimize one of my client's site for local search, and I read somewhere that including the address and the telephone number was the best way to help the process. That's how local search basically work.

Depending upon your client's need, it might work in your advantage or maybe, it won't. For example, let's say your client is located in New York and wants to target Australian audience.

    Hi,

Is there an SEO friendly way to list phone numbers on a site?

    For example 555.555.5555 or (555) 555-5555 or 555-555-5555

    Or it makes no difference?

    Best Regards,

    Hello,

It depends.. If you have a number of websites that are uniquely different and offer different things then it will not matter.

If you have similar sites that are pretending to be different then the tel number may give Google a pretty big hint that it is owned by the same person. However, longer term Google will look at registration details, IP addresses of both servers and ftp sources, as everything is recorded, so in this case the telephone number is still irrelevant.

If there is confusion over "duplicate content" then that would not apply to a telephone number. Hence, in any of the above scenarios it will make no difference..

There is a general consensus that Google trusts websites which it knows everything about especially the identity of the person/people behind it. It is a major part of why big brands fo well. It has been suggested that using G-mail and linked Google accounts etc all help to establish identity and hence increases trust. No idea how true that is but it does make sense.

No, you won't be penalized for it. Most business websites do that. As a matter of fact, it helps you with local search.

For having same phone number for different URL will never a reason of
penalty. The main problem with same phone number is that you will not
be able to submit different URL in local bbusiness directory because
mainly they take phone number as your identity.

    Hi Zamir,
Sorry for the off topic discussion, but any email which contains your reply direct goes into my spam filter. I use Apple Mail

Maybe, you should try cutting that signature down a little bit. This is just my opinion.
