I purchased a little favicon script to convert images to favicons.
I expected the script to work better than it does. Perhaps because it uses
GDlibrary instead of ImageMagik? As of right now, it is supposed to take
an uploaded GIF/PNG/Jpeg image and generate an 16x16 animated GIF, a 16x16
PNG favicon, a 16x16 PNG preview image, a 32x32 PNG preview image, and then
use the PNG preview images to create one 16x16 .ICO favicon and another
multiresolution ICO icon with a 16x16 image and a 32x32 image.
Well, it doesn't make any of the ICO images at all. The animated GIF is
pretty lame. It does support PNG transparency, and when using a 24 bit PNG
file with a complex transparency, it works well.
I wrote the developer and he took a ereg deprication error out of the php
script, but the .ICO file still has no images, and there is only one.
And then the animated GIF image is all screwed-up. It simply scrolls your
text and the image is always awful.
The developer only seems to think that I need a 16 x 16 pixel favicon even
though he promised a package of 5 icons. I'm not mad at him, haven't even
addressed that part of it, but it got me thinking...
I'd like to setup the same thing and have it work right, as I expected it
to. If anyone would like to help me iron this out by taking on the
project with me, please write me a personal email (I am username sitepro on
google's mail system).

working, or find a new one, not find such a utility already online.

LOL... that's the one I bought.
it says it bundles up 5 icons, but it does not.
1) One 16x16 animated GIF
2) Two 16x16 PNG image files. These are the same image, how does it count
as two images, because they have two different names?
3) One 32x32 PNG file.
4) One PNG file that was renamed to .ICO which is a web design trick. But
this is NOT a legal .ICO icon file and will not show up on your desktop, in
folders, etc...
So..... don't buy that crappy script. It uses false advertising to make
you think you are getting what you want. I actually expected that the 5th
favicon would be a multiresolution icon (a 16x16 image & either a 32x32 or
48x48 image), and maybe it did that at one time, but there was a
depreciation error in php and it seems clear that this author doesn't
understand the issue.
OK, so a head's up. Maybe it will get fixed and everything will be
allright. But I still want one that produces much better images by using
ImageMagik.
If anyone wants to take on this task I can pay to get it done.

I guess you'd be forking this? Are there license issues in modifying or correcting someone else's script, regardlress of how cooperative the script author is about correcting his mistakes? The legal secretary in me is curious.

I don't think that owning a script that didn't work as advertised is any
reason to not commission one that will work exactly as I request, Joni.
Especially when I want it to be php5 and use ImageMagik and the other guys
didn't create icons, used depreciated php coding, and accessed GD library.
Plus, I want real multi-resolution icons.
I probably won't be able to afford it, though.

The logo/photo to favicon convertor script is online and working at
http://www.faviconvert.com/
It does work, but I am unhappy with the quality of the resulting images,
and that the .ico file is only partially supported. So, I guess I must be
in a bad mood.
Apologies... but you were starting to sound like my dad, the lawyer.

$100 is far from what I would charge for an original script from scratch.
sorry

I'm not unhappy with the script I bought, I just want a better one now that
I'm done putting that one online. I want a pro version that I can use.
Why doesn't that make sense?
I did see the preview, but you do expect to see certain things that you
normally take for granted. When I got the script and it didn't work,
that's when I was unhappy. But the developer straightened that out
quickly.
Still, I know how much I use these utilities and I would like a pro
version. WTF does anyone have a problem with that?
What would you charge for a script like that which you could turn around
and sell to others, BTW?

If anyone is interested, I had a little time and installed a directory at
http://www.wdadg.org/ - our website.
I finally figured out what the problem was with my CSS.
I am still waiting for the nameservers to resolve on the new subdomain, but
when they do I'll tell you where it is and members can, if they choose,
post their freelancer or company info there.
It will be free, though you have to be a member and can only have one link,
but it will support google maps and pagerank will be updated regularly.
Additionally, I have some software to weed out spammy or malicious sites,
as well as adsense scrapers and parked domains. So as a member directory
it will be kept clean and such.
The same software that powers the directory will also power article
writing. But I might add another CMS for managing the files/pages. But if
I do it will be able to import the articles from the subdomain, too.

Doug,
Greetings!
I am an older guy in over my head. I used to work with a guy named Doug
Peters when I was in Alameda. We were both in the service.
Anyway, I would like to add some clip art to my word press websites. Any
ideas?
Blessings, peace and joy,
JJ
- Artist <sitepro@gmail.com> Jul 15 02:03PM -0500
Sounds like a good idea. Just find your clipart. wordpress kind of works
like a word processor online and you can resize the images and everything.
I would use as much original stuff as possible, like photos and stuff I
have done, but that's because I do that stuff. ;)

This is not a job board!
Sad to say it, but you just posted SPAM, Avinash. Normally I would ban the
poster the very first instance of spam, and delete the post. I don't
actually know why I'm not doing just that. Perhaps I am in a good mood
after getting a few of my websites back online. But if anyone posts a job,
that is considered spam. I suppose because its a contract for a
freelancer, I am letting it go, this time.
Actually, contracts are good things, as freelancers we thrive on them.
So maybe I should put this up to a vote or something?
What do you guys think about posting contracts even though this is not what
the board is for? When I started this I wanted to use it to help me find
designers and developers for certain projects myself. I think we should
all be able to team up as freelancers to take on bigger projects. But this
can't turn into a job board, either.
What do you think?

I have contacted various list members OFFLINE and asked about their availability to help with certain projects only because, through this list, they have demonstrated a skillset that I need, and I think this list provides the ability for all of us to be able to let others learn who we are and our value system and skills. But I wouldn't post a solicitation for a job here without first seeking approval for such a post from Douglas. But that's just me.

> I belong to another list where you can pay a certain amount each year for a directory listing in two different categories; it costs extra to be listed in each additional category. The directory is heavily promoted. I have gotten a few jobs from those listings and while the directory is open to the public, it has been sub jobs from other list members that we've gotten. I don't know if this is something Douglas would want to undertake. Payments for the listings are managed exclusively by PayPal subscriptions.
