- ico file in I.E. 7 [4 Updates]
- S2ART <stu.moules@googlemail.com> May 27 06:57AM -0700
Could anyone please help me with the shortcut icon for ie. It is NOT
of great urgency so don't waste your Sunday if you have better things
to do, but I cant figure it out. I have no problems displaying the
bitmap in firefox, I don't know about any other browsers but i.e. 7
wont display it. Site is: http://www.stusroom.com
I have tried putting the favicon.ico file in every directory including
the images folder and linking to it.
I have tried just <link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico.bmp">.
Then tried changing the mimetype to "image/vnd.microsoft.icon" and
"image/x-icon".
I have also tried absoulte url's, and just placing a favicon.ico file
in the root.
The file is 32x32 and 16 bit depth in windows byte order bmp file.
Thank you, Stuart.

I see it in Chrome.
OK, if you are trying to use an image, use a gif or png.
It is better to use an .ico if you want to drag it onto the desktop.
In .ico the favicon needs to be 16x16, or 32x32 and although I hear x 256
colors, I have no problem with 16bit color, including trancperencies.
The best bet is to make a multi-image icon with a 16x16 and a 48x48
version, at least.
I do not think that IE even supports the graphics (not even png or gif) but
I'd have to check.

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://example.com/myicon.ico" />
This is the only thing supported by IE.
All browsers except Seamonkey support fetching a favicon.ico in the root
directory of a website by default.

Thanks for all your help Doug. Much appreciated. I converted to a 16x16px
8bit png, but still no joy. I am going to call it a day on this for the
time being, the server is now down (one.com, please don't rip on me).
Regards, Stu.
